Project Overview

The Stocking & Co. Pepperbox pistol was a multi-barrel firearm that grew in popularity after the American Civil War. Its pepper-box system succeeded the flintlock and introduced the percussion cap, a staple of modern handguns. Its design was highly imperfect as the hammerlock could potentially set all six barrels off and harm its user. This imperfection led to the creation of the revolver, which quickly surpassed the pepperbox gun in popularity. At its peak, it was the perfect gun to shoot your opponent after losing in a round of poker.

I've been playing a lot of Red Dead Online with my mates so I was inspired to create something from the 19th century. This project was created entirely away from home, so I had to improvise on a lot of things. The majority of the modelling was done in Maya, with the high-poly incorporating the use of floaters. The filigree was drawn in Procreate and brought to Substance Designer and converted into a Normal map where it was then implemented in Substance Painter. I also did not have my material library, so I stacked several materials together in order to achieve the look that I had wanted. Overall, it was an exciting process and I'm proud to call this my first piece of 2021!
